Academy and Tony Award-winning film and stage director and actor known for his ability to elicit virtuoso performances from the actors he directs. He started his career doing a standup routine with Elaine May before moving to directing plays and films. His stage credits include The Odd Couple (1965) and Plaza Suite (1968). His films include The Graduate (1967), Carnal Knowledge (1971), Silkwood (1983), Heartburn (1986), Postcards from the Edge (1990), The Birdcage (1996) and Primary Colors (1998). He is married to broadcast reporter Diane Sawyer.
