The Social Security Death Index

The Question:
I would like to know if there is any way I can find out if a friend has passed away. The only information I have is her name and hometown. We have been long time friends and I would really appreciate any help I could get from you. Thanks.
The Answer:
One of the best sites around for geneological research is FamilySearch, run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They allow free searches of several databases, including the Social Security Death Index, which contains over 75,000 records.
Other resources can be found in our Genealogy Guide. Good luck!
