Dancer and film and stage actor who was an innovator in musical films, bringing the exuberance and athleticism of his dance to the genre. He is best remembered for Singin' in the Rain (1952), in which he sang the title song while dancing through the streets in a downpour. In Anchors Aweigh (1945), he appeared with Jerry the Mouse, the first time animation and live action were used together in a film. His other screen credits include Cover Girl (1944), An American in Paris (1951) and Brigadoon (1954). His Broadway roles include Pal Joey and Best Foot Forward.
