A hulking, charismatic leading man, he has become an enormously popular and prolific international star. He is perhaps best known to American audiences for his starring roles in The Return of Martin Guerre (1982), Jean de Florette (1986), Camille Claudel (1988), and Peter Weir's Green Card (1990). He won César awards, the French equivalent of the Oscar, for his performances in The Last Metro (1980) and Cyrano de Bergerac (1990). He also appeared in Les Miserables (2000) and 102 Dalmatians (2000).
