Janet McTeer
actress
Born: 1962

An acclaimed British stage actress, McTeer made her big-screen debut in 1986's Half Moon Street. Although she appeared in several other films, including Wuthering Heights (1992) and Carrington (1995), it was not until she played Mary Jo, a vivacious, independent mom who uproots her young daughter to start anew in California, in 1999's Tumbleweeds that she earned much-deserved fame on these shores. The performance earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination and a Best Actress Golden Globe. She won a Tony Award in 1997 for her turn in Ibsen's A Doll's House. She also had a leading role in Songcatcher (2000).
