After writing for the 1970s TV series Starsky and Hutch and Police Story, Mann won an Emmy Award as cowriter for the TV movie The Jericho Mile (1979). As creator and director of the series Miami Vice (1984–89), he brought a new look and feel to television with slick design, fast-paced action plots, and cutting-edge rock music. He also directed the TV series Crime Story (1986–88), the beautifully rendered film Last of the Mohicans (1992), and Heat (1995), for which he also wrote the screenplay. He also directed the critically acclaimed but box office disappointment The Insider (1999).
