French-born artist and feminist known for her nanas sculptures, papier-mâché figures of enormous, voluptuous women. One of the Nouveaux Réalistes of the early 1960s, de Saint Phalle also earned fame for her “shooting paintings,” works created by firing a gun at her sculptures, which contained bags of paint.
