Birthplace: Hillsboro, West Virginia
Raised in China where her parents were Presbyterian missionaries, Buck returned to China after college. Many of her novels describe the life of Chinese peasants; the best known being the Pulitzer-Prize-winning The Good Earth (1931). She won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938.
