Pilar Miró Romero

director
Born: 4/20/1940
Birthplace: Madrid, Spain

Miró was the first woman drama director to work in television in Spain, beginning as a program assistant in 1960 and becoming a director in 1963. Her first feature film was a feminist drama; her second, El Crimen de Cuenca (1979), was banned for a time in Spain because of controversial political content, yet was hailed by film critics. As director of cinema for Spain's cultural ministry (1982–85), Miró obtained government subsidies to support the work of young filmmakers. Her final directing projects included the films Beltenebros (1992) and El Perro del Hortelano (1997).
