Originally a dancer and choreographer, she turned to making experimental short films and documentaries in the 1950s. Later she directed, edited and produced the feature films The Connection (1962), about a heroin junkie as the subject of a documentary, and Portrait of Jason (1967), an interview with a black male hustler.
