Synthesis of vitamin B1—Williams isolated thiamine in crystalline form and synthesized vitamin B1. He was instrumental in achieving enrichment of flour, cornmeal and other cereal grains, helping to eliminate pellagra and riboflavin deficiency among poor people. He also invented processes for making submarine insulation. (1991)
