Thomas Dewey
politician
Born: 3/24/1902
Birthplace: Owosso, Mich.
A prominent lawyer and district attorney in New York City (1937–41), Dewey went on to serve as governor of New York from 1943 to 1955. He ran for president on the Republican ticket unsuccessfully in 1944 and 1948. His second try earned him a place in American political folklore, however, when an early edition of the Chicago Daily Tribune printed the incorrect headline “Dewey Defeats Truman”.
