  1. Also calleda white, crystalline, water-soluble, poisonous mass, CHOH, obtained from coal tar, or a hydroxyl derivative of benzene: used chiefly as a disinfectant, as an antiseptic, and in organic synthesis.
  2. any analogous hydroxyl derivative of benzene.
