Fernández, Alberto Ángel, 1959–, Argentinian political leader. A lawyer by training, he taught criminal law at the Univ. of Buenos Aires and had a number of political affiliations before joining the Peronist Justicialist party in 1983. He was the national superintendent of insurance (1989–95), a city legislator in Buenos Aires (2000–2003), and chief of the cabinet of ministers under Presidents Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (2003–8). He then worked in private business and as a government strategist and negotiator. In 2019 he defeated Mauricio Macri to win the presidency as the candidate of the main opposition coalition, the Peronist Frente do Todos; his vice-presidential running mate was Fernández de Kirchner. He subsequently secured passage of legislation legalizing abortion.
