Bukele Ortez, Nayib Armando, 1981–, Salvadoran businessman and politician. Of Palestinian descent, he followed his father into business at an early age. Originally a member of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), he began his political career in 2012 as mayor of the small town of Nuevo Cuscatlán. In 2015 he was elected mayor of San Salvador. He was expelled from the FMLN in 2017, accused of creating division in the party. After trying unsuccessfully to form his own party, Bukele ran for president with the backing of the center-right Grand Alliance for National Unity, waging his campaign chiefly on social media. Easily elected in 2019, he became the first person in three decades to win the office who was not from the Nationalist Republican Alliance or FMLN.
