Gruevski, Nikola, 1970–, Macedonian political leader. An economist, he worked for the Balkan Bank (1995–98), then served as trade minister (1999) and finance minister (1999–2002) under Prime Minister Ljubčo Georgievski, helping to build a market economy. A member of the center-right Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization–Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity, Gruevski was party leader from 2003 until 2017, and served as prime minister of Macedonia (now North Macedonia) from 2006 to 2016. In 2018 he was convicted and sentenced on corruption charges, but fled to Hungary, where he was granted political asylum. In 2020 he was convicted in absentia in Macedonia of inciting a 2013 mob attack on the mayor of a Skopje municipality.
