Taeuber-Arp, Sophie, 1889–1943, Swiss textile designer, painter, and sculptor, b. Sophie Henriette Gertrude Taeuber. She taught textile design (1916–29) at the School of Arts and Crafts in Zürich, then moved to Paris with her husband, Jean Arp. Members of the Dada movement, they collaborated on numerous projects including abstract multimedia works they called Duo-Collages. Her works on paper and canvas and her sculptures combined biomorphic and geometric shapes. Her best-known works include a group of wooden marionettes (1918) and Dada Heads (1920), painted wooden sculptures with geometric faces. She also founded and edited (1937–39) Plastique, an art review.
