Jørgensen, Anker Henrik, 1922–2016, Danish political leader, prime minister of Denmark (1972–73, 1975–82), b. Copenhagen. A trade union leader and a member of the Social Democratic party (SDP), he was first elected to parliament in 1964 and became head of the SDP in 1972. As prime minister, he led Denmark into the European Economic Community (later the European Union) and enacted numerous social reforms; he resigned (1982) when his plans for budget cuts and tax increases for Denmark's budget and economic problems did not win support. He stepped down as SDP leader in 1987 but continued in parliament till 1994.
