Corbyn, Jeremy Bernard, 1949–, British politician. A trade union organizer, he served on the Haringey District Council in London (1974–83) before he was first elected to Parliament, where he became a spokesman for the left wing of the Labour party. After the 2015 parliamentary elections, in which Labour lost heavily, Corbyn succeeded Edward Miliband as party leader, but he found himself at odds at times with the party's more centrist members of Parliament. Though Labour again lost to the Conservatives in 2017, Corbyn led the party to unexpected gains. In 2019, however, the party suffered significant losses, and he resigned as leader in 2020. He subsequently was suspended from the Labour party over his handling of anti-Semitism in the party.
