Garcetti, Eric Michael, 1971–, American politician, b. Los Angeles, grad. Columbia (B.A., 1993; M.A., 1993), stud. Oxford and London School of Economics. The son of Los Angeles district attorney Gil Garcetti, he began his career teaching public policy, diplomacy, and world affairs at the Univ. of Southern California and Occidental College. A moderate Democrat, he entered politics in 2001, winning a seat on the Los Angeles City Council. Reelected in 2005 and 2009, he became council president in 2006. In 2013 he was elected mayor of Los Angeles; he was reelected in 2017.
