Guaidó, Juan (Juan Gerardo Guaidó Márquez), 1983–, Venezuelan political leader. An industrial engineer by training, he helped establish the Popular Will party in 2009 and was a protégé of party leader Leopoldo López. Elected as an alternate to Venezuela's National Assembly in 2010, he was elected as a representative in 2015. In 2019 he became president of the assembly, and subsequently led the opposition to President Nicholás Maduro Moros. After the assembly declared the president's reelection illegitimate, Guaidó proclaimed himself interim president and was recognized as such by several countries, including the United States. Subsequent efforts to dislodge Maduro from power, however, proved ineffective.
