Aligarh

Aligarh əlēgŭrˈ [key], city, Uttar Pradesh state, N central India. A district administrative headquarters and an important agricultural trade center, it also has a number of processing plants for agricultural goods. It is famous chiefly for Aligarh Muslim university, opened in 1875 as Anglo-Oriental College, which is the leading school for Indian Muslims. The city, whose native name is Koil, has ancient Buddhist remains and many Muslim buildings.
