Miyazu

Miyazu mēyäˈzo͞o [key], town (1990 pop. 26,450), Kyoto prefecture, S Honshu, Japan, on Miyazu Bay. It is a fishing port and processes marine products. Nearby is Ama-no-hashidate, or “heaven's bridge,” a long promontory covered with pine trees whose fantastic shapes are reflected in the waters of the bay. This was the site, according to legend, where Izanagi and Izanami stood while they created the islands of Japan (see Shinto).
