New Taipei City [key], special municipality (2010 pop. 4,054,467), c.790 sq mi (2,050 sq km), N Taiwan, the most populous municipality in Taiwan. Formerly Taipei co., it was established as a special municipality in 2010 and surrounds the capital of Taipei. The Tamsui is the main river. Technology, service industries, and tourism are economically important, and there is a major port on the East China Sea. Tea, rice, sweet potatoes and citrus are grown, and coal and other minerals are mined. Manufacturing includes paper and wood products, textiles, machinery, and chemicals. Three nuclear reactors in the north produce much of Taiwan's electricity.
