Colleyville, city (2020 pop. 26,057), Tarrant co., NE Tex.; inc. 1956. A residential suburb located between Dallas and Fort Worth, the area was originally settled during the 1850s. In 1888, the town was named Bransford when the St. Louis, Arkansas, and Texas Railway established a station there, and then was renamed (c. 1914) after Dr. Lilburn Howard Colley, a Civil War veteran and noted local physician. Falling into decline after World War I, the area's population fell to around 140 people in 1940. Then, as the suburban area around Dallas/Fort Worth grew, the population boomed from about 1500 in 1960 to its current level of over 26,000 people. In late January 2022, Congregation Beth Israel, a local synagogue, was the scene of a 11-hour hostage standoff. British national Malik Faisal Akram held the Rabbi and three other parishioners, demanding the release of a convicted terrorist, Aafia Siddiqui, who is serving a prison term in nearby Fort Worth. After one hostage was released and the remaining ones escaped, officials stormed the synagogue and Akram was killed. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is located about three-and-a-half miles from town.
