Glen Ridge, borough (2020 pop. 7,802), Essex co., NE N.J., a residential suburb of New York City; inc. 1895. Originally part of Bloomfield Township, the borough was created by an act of the NJ legislature. During the 19th century, it was home to several mills that provided power for light industry in the area. The arrival of the railroad, with two lines opened in 1856 and 1872 through town, helped establish it as a commuter's suburb of New York City. It gained notoriety in 1989 when four local high school boys were tried and convicted of sexually assaulting a mentally disabled classmate.
