Åbenrå

Åbenrå ôˈbənrôˈ [key], city, capital of Sønderjylland co., S Denmark, at the head of the Åbenrå Fjord. It is a port and the commercial center for a rich agricultural region. The city was chartered in 1335. It was held by Prussia from 1864 to 1920 and was then known as Apenrade. The name was spelled Aabenraa until 1948.
