Helsingborg or Hälsingborg [key], city, Malmöhus co., S Sweden, a seaport on the Øresund, connected by ferry with Helsingør, Denmark. It is a commercial and industrial center. Manufactures include processed copper, ships, rubber, electrical goods, textiles, and refined sugar. A trade center and stronghold since the 9th cent., Helsingborg passed from Denmark to Sweden in 1658 but was destroyed during the Danish-Swedish conflicts in the 17th cent. The city was rebuilt in 1710. Its modern industrial development dates from the mid-19th cent. Of note are a well-preserved castle (12th–15th cent.), the Church of St. Mary (13th–15th cent.), and numerous half-timber houses.
