Kosciuszko, Mount [key], 7,310 ft (2,228 m) high, SE New South Wales, Australia, in the Australian Alps; highest peak on the continent of Australia. Located in Kosciuszko National Park, the peak is a popular hiking destination in the summer. It was originally called Mt. Townsend, but the names of the two neighboring peaks were swapped in 1892 after surveyors found that the one called Kosciusko after the Polish patriot and believed to be Australia's highest point was in fact a little lower. The spelling of the peak's name was changed from the English Kosciusko to the Polish Kosciuszko in 1997.
