Hockey Injury Doesn't Deter Dedicated Player

Nolan is a fourth-grade student at Rockport Elementary School in Massachusetts. He wrote this essay about his worst fear.
It was a bright sunny morning on August 12, 2005. I was very excited, so excited that I got up early and finished my breakfast at 7:00 a.m. Butterflies were in my stomach because I was waiting for my first hockey game on the season!
"Wow, this is going to be fun today at hockey. My first travel hockey game ever," I was thinking to myself as we drove closer and closer toward the rink.
My nerves were in high gear as I entered the rink's locker room with all my teammates. I quickly pulled my skates tight and put on all my equipment. The buzzer rang, and my team came blistering out of the locker room and stepped on to the smooth, glossy ice. The lights clicked on as the music played during warm-ups. The other team looked fierce and mean. Something reminded me though, that this was the team that always checks, and I forgot my mouthpiece! When I realized that I forgot my mouthpiece, my heart sank.
But the play went on. I was heading for the net, "My first shot of the season," I thought. Suddenly something hit me, and the next thing I knew I was on the sparkling ice. My jaw felt like it wasn't even there! The refs came over and asked me if I was okay.
After all, I was okay and I got up and scored two goals, almost three! We won 3 - 0, and that was the best team in the league. I really don't know how I overcame my fear to this day. But I do know one thing, hockey is getting rougher as the years pass, and I need to overcome my fear and protect myself or I may never play hockey ever again.
