NFL Football Preview 1999: AFC West
Denver Broncos - Quarterback John Elway is gone, but running back Terrell Davis isn't. The offense will continue to thrive, but expect a loss or two more this season due to quarterback inexperience and a tough schedule. No team has ever won three straight Super Bowls.
Oakland Raiders - Rich Gannon, who was signed in the offseason to replace quarterback Jeff George, might be a good fit with this team and he could improve on last year's 8-8 record. The Raiders must play better against teams in their division, however, (4-4 in 1998) if they want to make it back to the playoffs for the first time since the 1993 season.
Seattle Seahawks - Former Green Bay coach Mike Holmgren takes over as head coach for the Seahawks. Six years ago Holmgren turned the Packers from a 4-12 team to a 9-7 team in one season. We expect more of the same in Seattle.
Kansas City Chiefs - The Chiefs have a solid offensive line and experienced defensive unit, but their record will rely on whoever takes care of the running duties for this team. K.C. has tried several players at the position during the preseason, but nobody has proven they can be the team's workhorse. Unless things change, the Chiefs will hover around .500 all season.
San Diego Chargers - The Chargers will use veteran quarterbacks Jim Harbaugh and Erik Kramer while last year's first round pick Ryan Leaf heals his injured shoulder. New coach Mike Riley has never coached an NFL game but has the reputation of someone who gets the most out of players. The Chargers will need that…and then some.
