1998 NFL Football Preview

NFC East

This is perhaps the most interesting division in the entire league. It appears that with no overwhelming favorites in the preseason, any one of four teams could win it outright.

Some thought that the New York Giants looked like the team to beat, but when star cornerback Jason Sehorn went down with a season-ending injury their chances took a significant hit. Starting quarterback Danny Kanell will have to step it up this season if the Giants are to make any noise.

It could be the return of some familiar faces to the post-season this year. The Dallas Cowboys have a new coach, a new attitude and some experienced talent on board in 1998. The guy that could put it all together for them is the formerly frightening Emmitt Smith. If Smith (or for that matter new addition Chris Warren) has a big year, fear the 'Boys.

The Washington Redskins defense is new and improved, and if Michael Westbrook has the year we've been anticipating for three seasons they could be on their way to the playoffs. On the other hand, if quarterback Gus Frerotte has another off year the offense will sputter and they'll be in trouble.

Can Jake Plummer save the Arizona Cardinals? He's got guys to throw to, a servicable backfield, and a young, up-and-coming defense. Plummer is certainly one of the best young quarterbacks in the league. How long will it take him to be the best young quarterback? His running backs will need to help him.

The Philadelphia Eagles are hurting. With serious question marks are nearly every position, it appears the Eagles are destined for the cellar of the NFC East.
