Director considered one of the most influential of the late 20th century. His films, which draw on his experiences growing up as the son of Italian immigrants and his encyclopedic knowledge of film history, include Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), and GoodFellas (1990). He has also taken on politically sensitive subjects with The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) and Kundun (1997). His mother was actress Catherine Scorsese.
