Grammy Award-winning rhythm and blues singer known for her powerful vocals and her athletic dancing. Her career began in 1956 with her husband's band, Ike Turner and the Kings of Rhythm, but fell apart when she left the band and the abusive Ike. She reemerged in 1984 with Private Dancer. Her other recordings include Simply the Best (1991), “Proud Mary” (1972), and “River Deep, Mountain High” (1966). She appeared in the Mel Gibson flick, Mad Max Beyond Thuderdome (1985). The 1993 film What's Love Got to Do With It? starring Angela Bassett dramatized her tumultuous relationship with Ike. She continues to perform and record; her latest album is All the Best (2004).
