Amasa LEARNED, Congress, CT (1750-1825)

LEARNED, Amasa, (grandfather of John Law), a Representative from Connecticut; born in Killingly, Conn., November 15, 1750; prepared for college by a private tutor; was graduated from Yale College in 1772; taught in the Union School, New London; studied theology; received a license from the Windham Association on October 10, 1773, and preached for a short time; commenced the study of law in 1778; member of the state house of representatives in 1779; moved to New London; member of the state house of representatives 1785-1791; member of the convention, which ratified the Constitution of the United States in 1788; elected to the upper house of assistants in 1791; elected as a Pro-Administration candidate to the Second and Third Congresses (March 4, 1791-March 3, 1795); engaged in land speculations; delegate to the state constitutional convention in 1818; died in New London, New London County, Conn., May 4, 1825; interment in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
