Benjamin Franklin HOPKINS, Congress, WI (1829-1870)

HOPKINS, Benjamin Franklin, a Representative from Wisconsin; born in Hebron, N.Y., April 22, 1829; attended the common schools and became a telegraph operator; moved to Madison, Wis., in 1849; private secretary to Governor Bashfourd in 1856 and 1857; served in the State senate in 1862 and 1863; member of the State assembly in 1866; elected as a Republican to the Fortieth and Forty-first Congresses and served from March 4, 1867, until his death in Madison, Dane County, Wis., January 1, 1870; chairman, Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds (Forty-first Congress); interment in Forest Hill Cemetery.
