Carlos FRENCH, Congress, CT (1835-1903)
FRENCH, Carlos, a Representative from Connecticut; born in Humphreysville (later Seymour), Conn., August 6, 1835; attended the common schools of Seymour and General Russellâs Military School, New Haven, Conn.; engaged in manufacturing; invented the spiral steel car spring and the corrugated volute spring; member of the State house of representatives in 1860 and again in 1868; president and treasurer of the Fowler Nail Co. from 1869 until his death; vice president of the H.A. Matthews Manufacturing Co.; director of the Union Horse Shoe Nail Co. of Chicago, of the Second National Bank of New Haven, of the Colonial Trust Co. of Waterbury, Conn., and of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad Co.; member of the Democratic National Committee; elected as a Democrat to the Fiftieth Congress (March 4, 1887-March 3, 1889); was not a candidate for renomination in 1888; resumed his former manufacturing pursuits and corporate connections; died in Seymour, New Haven County, Conn., April 14, 1903; interment in Union Cemetery.
