Charles BARWIG, Congress, WI (1837-1912)
BARWIG, Charles, a Representative from Wisconsin; born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, March 19, 1837; immigrated to the United States in 1845 with his parents, who settled in Milwaukee, Wis.; attended the public schools and was graduated from the Spencerian Business College at Milwaukee in 1857; moved to Mayville in 1865 and engaged in the wholesale liquor business; mayor of Mayville 1886-1888; elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-first, Fifty-second, and Fifty-third Congresses (March 4, 1889-March 3, 1895); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Treasury (Fifty-third Congress); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1894 to the Fifty-fourth Congress; engaged in the real estate business; died in Mayville, Wis., on February 15, 1912; interment in Graceland Cemetery.
