Courtland Cushing MATSON, Congress, IN (1841-1915)
MATSON, Courtland Cushing, a Representative from Indiana; born in Brookville, Franklin County, Ind., April 25, 1841; was graduated from Indiana Asbury (later De Pauw) University in 1862; during the Civil War enlisted as a private in the Sixteenth Regiment, Indiana Volunteers; after one yearâs service entered the Sixth Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Cavalry (Seventy-first Volunteers), and served until October 1865, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of colonel; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Greencastle, Putnam County, Ind.; was three times elected prosecuting attorney of the county; chairman of the Democratic State central committee in 1878; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-seventh and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1881-March 3, 1889); chairman, Committee on Invalid Pensions (Forty-eighth through Fiftieth Congresses); was not a candidate for renomination; unsuccessful Democratic candidate for Governor of Indiana in 1888; resumed the practice of law in Greencastle, Ind.; member of the board of tax commissioners 1909-1913; died in Chicago, Ill., September 4, 1915; interment in Forest Hill Cemetery, Greencastle, Ind.
