Edwin William KEIGHTLEY, Congress, MI (1843-1926)

KEIGHTLEY, Edwin William, a Representative from Michigan; born on a farm near Scott, Lagrange County, Ind., August 7, 1843; attended the common schools, Lagrange Academy, and Valparaiso Collegiate Institute; was graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1865; was admitted to the bar in 1865 and commenced practice at White Pigeon, St. Joseph County, Mich.; prosecuting attorney of St. Joseph County in 1873 and 1874; appointed and subsequently elected judge of the fifteenth judicial circuit of Michigan in 1876 and served until 1877, having been elected to Congress; elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1877-March 3, 1879); appointed by President Hayes Third Auditor of the United States Treasury Department and served from April 30, 1879, to April 30, 1885, when he resigned; resumed the practice of his profession in Chicago; moved to Constantine, Mich., in 1899 and engaged in agricultural pursuits; died there May 4, 1926; interment in Constantine Cemetery.
