George GALE, Congress, MD (1756-1815)

GALE, George, (father of Levin Gale), a Representative from Maryland; born in Somerset County, Md., June 3, 1756; attended the common schools; served during the Revolutionary War; member of the Maryland convention which ratified the Federal Constitution in 1788; elected as a Pro-Administration candidate to the First Congress (March 4, 1789-March 3, 1791); appointed by President Washington on March 4, 1791, supervisor of distilled liquors for the district of Maryland; died at “Brookland,” Cecil County, Md., January 2, 1815; interment in the family burying ground on his estate.
