George HIRES, Congress, NJ (1835-1911)
HIRES, George, a Representative from New Jersey; born in Elsinboro Township, Salem County, N.J., January 26, 1835; attended the common schools and the Friendsâ School and received a commercial training; engaged in mercantile and manufacturing pursuits; sheriff of Salem County 1867-1869; member of the State senate 1881-1884; elected as a Republican to the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses (March 4, 1885-March 3, 1889); was not a candidate for renomination in 1888; resumed mercantile pursuits; also engaged in banking; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1894; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1896; member of the Republican State committee for twelve years; died in Atlantic City, N.J., February 16, 1911; interment in the First Presbyterian Cemetery, Salem, N.J.
