Gustavus SCOTT, Congress, MD (1753-1800)
SCOTT, Gustavus, (grandfather of William Lawrence Scott), a Delegate from Maryland; born at âWestwood,â Prince William County, Va., in 1753; went with his brother to Scotland in 1765 and studied at Kingâs College, Aberdeen, Scotland; entered the Middle Temple, London, England, in 1767, and completed his law studies in 1771; returned to Maryland in the latter year and settled in Somerset County, Md., where he practiced law; delegate to the Annapolis convention in 1774 and 1775; member of the Association of the Freemen of Maryland; member of the first state constitutional convention in 1776; moved to Dorchester County; member of the House of Delegates in 1780; elected to the Continental Congress in 1784, but did not attend; resumed the practice of law; moved to Montgomery County in 1794; one of the commissioners to superintend the erection of the public buildings in Washington, D.C., 1794-1800; died in Washington, D.C., December 25, 1800; interment on his farm in Virginia.
