Henry Franklin THOMAS, Congress, MI (1843-1912)
THOMAS, Henry Franklin, a Representative from Michigan; born in Tompkins, Jackson County, Mich., December 17, 1843; attended the common schools and Albion (Mich.) College in 1859; enlisted in 1862 during the Civil War as a private in the Seventh Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Cavalry; was promoted to first sergeant of Company D, and in July 1864 to second lieutenant; renewed his studies in the Ypsilanti Normal School; was graduated from the medical department of Michigan University at Ann Arbor in 1868 and commenced practice in Constantine, St. Joseph County, Mich.; moved to Allegan, Mich., in 1870; member of the State house of representatives in 1873 and 1874; served in the State senate in 1875 and 1876; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1884; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1893-March 3, 1897); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Navy (Fifty-fourth Congress); was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1896; surgeon in the Michigan Soldiersâ Home in 1907 and 1908; member of the Michigan pardon board in 1909 and 1910; died in Allegan, Mich., April 16, 1912; interment in Oak Hill Cemetery, Ann Arbor, Mich.
