TORRENS, James H., a Representative from New York; born in New York City, September 12, 1874; attended grammar and high school in New York City; vice president and treasurer of a cigar manufacturing company; Democratic leader of the Twenty-third (later Fifteenth) Assembly district, 1933-1947; elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-eighth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Joseph A. Gavagan; reelected to the Seventy-ninth Congress and served from February 29, 1944, to January 3, 1947; was not a candidate for renomination in 1946; died in New York City, April 5, 1952; interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Mount Pleasant, N.Y.
