James LINN, Congress, NJ (1749-1821)

LINN, James, a Representative from New Jersey; born in Bedminster Township, Somerset County, N.J., in 1749; pursued preparatory studies and was graduated from Princeton College in 1769; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1772 and commenced practice in Trenton, N.J.; returned to Somerset County, N.J.; judge of the court of common pleas; member of the Provincial Congress of New Jersey in 1776; during the Revolutionary War served as captain in the Somerset County Militia in 1776; first major 1776-1781; member of the State council in 1777; returned to Trenton; served in the State general assembly in 1790 and 1791; again a member of the State council 1793-1797; elected as a Republican to the Sixth Congress (March 4, 1799-March 3, 1801); was not a candidate for renomination in 1800 to the Seventh Congress; was appointed by President Jefferson to be supervisor of the revenue and served from 1801 to 1809; served as secretary of state of New Jersey 1809-1820; died in Trenton, Mercer County, N.J., on January 5, 1821; interment in the Lamington Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Somerset County, N.J.
