John C. MACKIE, Congress, MI (1920-2008)

MACKIE, John C., a Representative from Michigan; born in Toronto, Canada, June 1, 1920; immigrated to the United States from Canada in 1924 with his parents, who settled in Detroit, Mich.; graduated from Southeastern High School, Detroit, Mich., 1938; attended Lawrence Institute of Technology, 1938-1939; B.S., Michigan State University, 1942; LL.D., Michigan State University, 1965; employed on airplane engine design in Detroit, 1942; United States Army Air Corps, 1942-1945, served in the Pacific Theater until discharged as a first lieutenant; employed by an engineering firm in the Flint area, 1946-1952; organized the Flint Surveying &Engineering Co., 1952; Genesee County surveyor, 1952-1956; elected State highway commissioner of Michigan, 1957 and reelected in 1961 to a new four-year term; elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-ninth Congress (January 3, 1965-January 3, 1967); unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the Ninetieth Congress in 1966; business owner; died on March 5, 2008, in Warrenton, Va.
