TEN EYCK, John Conover, a Senator from New Jersey; born in Freehold, Monmouth County, N.J., March 12, 1814; completed preparatory studies under private tutors; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1835 and commenced practice in Burlington, N.J.; prosecuting attorney for Burlington County 1839-1849; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1844; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1859, to March 3, 1865; unsuccessful candidate for reelection; appointed a member of a commission to revise the New Jersey constitution in 1875, and for a time was president of the commission; died in Mount Holly, N.J., August 24, 1879; interment in St. Andrew’s Cemetery.
