John Daniel LAWSON, Congress, NY (1816-1896)

LAWSON, John Daniel, a Representative from New York; born in Montgomery, Orange County, N.Y., February 18, 1816; attended the public schools; moved to New York City and was employed as a clerk in a dry-goods store; later, in 1843, engaged in mercantile pursuits; delegate to every Republican State, county, and district convention for thirty years; delegate to every Republican National Convention from 1868 to 1892; elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress (March 4, 1873-March 3, 1875); unsuccessful candidate for reelection; resumed his former business pursuits; died in New York City January 24, 1896; interment in Greenwood Cemetery.
