John DICK, Congress, PA (1794-1872)
DICK, John, (father of Samuel Bernard Dick), a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Pittsburgh, Pa., June 17, 1794; moved with his parents to Meadville, Pa., in December of that year; attended the common schools; major of the First Battalion in 1821; colonel of the First Regiment in 1825; brigadier general Second Brigade, Sixteenth Division, Pennsylvania Militia, in 1831; engaged in mercantile pursuits and banking; established the banking house of J.& J. R. Dick in 1850; associate judge of Crawford County in 1850; prominent in promoting the Atlantic & Great Western Railroad; trustee of Allegheny College, Meadville, Pa.; president of the Crawford Mutual Insurance Co.; elected as a Whig to the Thirty-third Congress; reelected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress; and reelected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1853-March 3, 1859); was nominated as a candidate for reelection in 1858 to the Thirty-sixth Congress, but subsequently withdrew; resumed his former business pursuits; died in Meadville, Crawford County, Pa., May 29, 1872; interment in Greendale Cemetery.
